And let’s not forget that Jeremy Lin was a restricted free agent. New York could have matched the deal if they truly wanted to keep Lin. They just would have to match everything, including the $15M final year, and eat the luxury tax. 

How do you tell a kid, yes a 23 year old kid, to not sign a gigantic contract in a state with no state income tax and a lot more money on the table? If Lin gets injured in two seasons and rides the pine until he’s released, is he going to pat himself on the back for the loyalty he showed the Knicks by signing for far less money?

This isn’t MLB or the NFL. Players disappear all the time after a 1 year flash in the pan.  You have to go to the highest bidder right then and there before you die out and are forgotten.  There should be no loyalty for a undrafted player who was waived by two different teams within back to back seasons.
